Club of Lisbon / About us

WHO WE ARE

We are a private, non-profit association, established by public deed in December 2016, as a corollary of the Lisbon Conferences – a project created by seven public and private entities – which the Club of Lisbon has since organised on an institutional basis. We are a legal entity recognised as being of public utility and registered as a Development NGO (NGDO).

Our purpose is to promote knowledge and debate on global challenges and key issues on the international agenda, with particular attention to those affecting Portugal and Europe. We believe in a world governed by international law, within the framework of a multilateral order that prioritises the peaceful resolution of conflicts, respect for democratic principles, and the protection of human rights.

We are based in Lisbon, a privileged international centre for reflection and debate, although our sphere of activity is both national and global.

HOW WE WORK

We operate as a network-based platform for activities, working closely with the Club’s members, who both benefit from and actively contribute to the success of our initiatives.

We prioritise collaborative action and maintain partnerships with foundations, think tanks, research centres, and other national and international organisations with relevant expertise in our areas of intervention. We involve a wide range of individuals in our activities – academics, politicians, business leaders, journalists, and all those with an interest in the issues we address – while maintaining a constant commitment to encouraging the participation of younger generations.

As a Club, we do not adopt or align ourselves with party-political positions. While we remain attentive to Portugal’s official domestic and foreign policy agenda, it does not shape or guide our actions.

We respect the freedom of opinion of all members and participants in our activities, and we actively value diversity and democratic dialogue. However, the views expressed in our publications and activities are the sole responsibility of their authors and do not bind the Club of Lisbon.
